$lum

Pittsburgh, PA

DMV ACCESS : Thanks for being part of the interview with DMV Access Music. First I want to ask you about where you are from and how did you get into music?

CHARLIE $LUM: I'm from Pittsburgh, PA. Originally the Beltzhoover region and then throughout suburbs of the further southern outskirts. I got it into music early, i've been writing lyrics since about 7 or 8 and i wrote a lot of actual poetry too. I somewhat seriously started pursuing it (doing shows and releasing music videos/songs/mixtapes) around 14 with a varying small collective of other local artists & then just about 2 1/2 years ago I went what i currently consider to be all the way.

DMV ACCESS: How was it at first when you started making music? And when did you decide to take music seriously?

CHARLIE $LUM: It was rough because i came from a music loving household but not a music making one so i don't feel like as was inclined as some others may have been from the start. My passion exceeded many though and i did have musical backing. My brother on the other hand, has had a much easier time. He's been drumming since he was two years old and has had a lot of people to guide him. He's from the DMV and there's more opportunities out here than back home. He's still doing great now, always busy and creating - he's with the DMV group 'Blaquestone' currently. I came up a lot differently. I wrote and still write far better than most of my peers but flow & developing a style that was both rhythmically and sonically pleasing was a struggle for me early on. A lot of people only found my music to be of quality from an emotional/lyrical/delivery standpoint. It's exceptionally hard to make money here as an artist too, that's a constant uphill battle. On the flip side though, when i was younger there was more novelty for what i was doing and that was definitely a plus at the time.

DMV ACCESS: Describe the style of your music? Are there any artists you think you sound like?

CHARLIE $LUM:  My style is hard to put a finger on. I consider myself to be very versatile. The only things that have real consistency with me are topics. I talk about metaphysical and subconscious things a lot, the things that are thought but not understood. I cover a lot of ground in the field of psychedelic drugs and various forms of cannabis. I touch on race, politics, history, sex, depression, general fun and even materialism. I am the total opposite of a commonplace rapper but I have many elements that i imagine feel akin.

Sonically, I've been evolving in a lot of ways. I feel like i don't sound like many vocally but i have somewhat natural inflections like Nas or Mick Jenkins. Flow wise I'm more like an MF Doom, or for a younger audience (and for you guys: local) maybe somewhat like a Goonew? I'm incorporating a lot more harmony or melody into what i do & a lot of that comes from songs I tried to formulate in my preteen years which was a little more R&B oriented but more contemporary inspirations for that aspect of my music come from artists like Bryson Tiller, Thouxanban Fauni, and Trippie Redd. I try to insert Saul Williams & Tupac like emotion but i have a sense of humor and vision in my music maybe similar to that of a Tyler the Creator. From the stance of engineering preferences, i loved multi faceted layers and while I pulled this from a multitude of musician sources through my life, i find Kodak Black to do much of the same. I just like my dubs and etc to be more subtle. I love the warmth and how more than one voice/emotion can be captured that way but I like it all to come together and all sound like one vocal track more or less - prior to mastering.

DMV ACCESS: Who were your musical influences? Who did you listen to growing up?

CHARLIE $LUM:  I listened to everything growing up, literally everything. From steely dan to arrested development. My main influences in rap though are Nas, Tupac, & MF Doom.

DMV ACCESS: So far, What have you released?

CHARLIE $LUM: So far, I've released the projects:

The Headband

The Paraphernalia Pages

Sounds & Coffee

Fuck Stacey Dash

Nate Ain't C'here

slum&taro

There's been quite a few songs and videos in between and my new project 'MICRO' is currently in the works.

DMV ACCESS: What should we be expecting from you in the near future?

CHARLIE $LUM: MICRO', i'm pushing and hoping for it creating a wave. I think this will be the first time I'm digestible enough to really hit that mark.

DMV ACCESS: If you could collaborate with any artist dead or alive. Who would they be and why?

CHARLIE $LUM: Dead? Tupac - Pac's voice and emotion he could bring to a record while being direct in his lyrics was unparalleled. Bob Marley - Bob's music was so powerful is was spiritual in itself. With the revolutionary aspects and the heavy ganja vibe; i need that collab. Jimi Hendrix - A solo from the god? A trip to lysergia literally and sonically? Enough said. Mac Miller - Mac is one of the most talented rappers in modern times and he's a hometown legend. We had lots of mutual friends but never met. Eyedea - The storytelling and flow...how vulnerable he let himself be in songs. I envy a lot of these qualities musically and would love to have them featured. Capital Steez - I feel Steez was just the New York version of myself. He was a great talent & i was SUPER into his music before he passed. The brother will be missed and i wish he was here to collab. Alive? MF Doom - The father of the flow I've found/made. The most unique rapper on the planet. The abstract, quirky, off kilter dark genius. The lord of bars having several meanings; need i say more? Nas - Okay, so not flow..but this brother taught me how to rap all through his career. From Illmatic on: my vocabulary, rapping voice, topics of choice, morality, general knowledge and knowledge of self were all brought on with this assistance of this man. It'd be an honor. Slug - The man who taught me how to put a mirror on myself and also ALWAYS posts my shit when i drop. It's all love with Slug man, he's a great dude. But equally as important he's a great and honest MC. One of the best and most distinct ever. Alchemist - FIRE FUCKING BEATS. Lucki - I really hate hard drugs and i normally don't really listen to 'mumble rap' in much of my downtime...however, Lucki is just brutally frank of upfront about his addiction(s) and doesn't glorify it much. It almost feels like he's someone i know battling with drugs. That someone just makes really dope music.

DMV ACCESS: Whats the music scene like in Pittsburgh?

CHARLIE $LUM: The music scene in Pittsburgh is essentially non existent or dead. That doesn't mean there's not a heavy helping of exceptional artists here but there is little to know industry and it's such a backwards, bigoted, and blue collar town - people and especially musicians, rappers even more particularly never make it out. It's hell with the lid half closed and it's a trap. There's just some great people here and we make the best of it. I also don't want to shit on my hometown, there's a strong group trying to change the dynamics of how the city functions in these aspects - they're just fighting against a traditional system that's been put in place to make others feel comfortable and not people like themselves. It's a shame and embarrassing sometimes but it's home for better or worse.

DMV ACCESS: Who are some other Pittsburgh artist we should check out?

CHARLIE $LUM: Too many to count. Asco, Slicky Williams, Moe The Natural, Jus Lou, Ron Car, KH, Camp Yola, Jor, MiilesDavis, WestSide Pound, Akono Miles, BBGuns, Reese Yungn, Kizzl, Yuck Yams, s/o to anyone i forgot. I'm thinking of performing artists whenever i say this. We might have an even larger collective of dope producers.

DMV ACCESS: If there were 3 songs from you we should check out, which songs would they be?

CHARLIE $LUM:  In no specific order

BUMMER

O Wakare

BANDS

DMV ACCESS: Describe the things you write about.

CHARLIE $LUM: My daughter, family, love, anger, race, feeling isolated, being doubted or the underdog, history, guns, cannabinoids, LSD, mushrooms, politics, every type of cannabis extract there is, life, death, comedy, things that are pornographic by nature, the subconscious mind, money, poverty, jewelry, clothes, cars, identity, violence, dream and fictitious scenarios, drawing parallels to other forms of art and pop culture..i leave no topic untouched. I even try to insert myself into the minds of others or my younger self in order to create. I often attempt or do write from perspectives not fully my own.

DMV ACCESS: I just watched the Bummer music video. The song and music video were really impressive. What was it like shooting the video? Did it take a lot of time?

CHARLIE $LUM: The video was a painstaking process but more than worth it. My director is great and easy to work with but we wanted to go above and beyond with this one while still staying true to the nature of the song. So editing was long and complicated as we had to add tons of special effects but subtle ones so we didn't go overboard. There was a small conflict of interest with a model and there was even a little fender bender. Getting the cars, shooting multiple days, weather, location, wardrobe etc. it just got really exhausting but it looked so good finished none of that mattered. A lot of people think it's the best video dropped around here in a really long time.

DMV ACCESS: Can we be expecting more music videos from you soon?

CHARLIE $LUM: TONS

DMV ACCESS: That music video reached 65K views and you aren’t even signed yet. To any artists out there struggling to get views and there music heard, What advice would you give them?

CHARLIE $LUM: Research how the social media platform that you plan to release your video on - actually works. Find promotion agencies or a public relations firm that deals with artists. Promote yourself through multiple avenues, play to your strongpoints and get creative. Find low cost outlets or outlets that are realistic to repost your music and submit, submit, submit.

DMV ACCESS: Anything you would like to say to your fans?

CHARLIE $LUM:

DMV ACCESS: Where can we check out your music and how can we reach you?

CHARLIE $LUM:  I love my fans & supporters, I don't know where I'd be without y'all. Just buy my shit.

I'm on all streaming platforms with my newer stuff but bandcamp is probably best if you wanna go through my older catalogue. Instagram is the best place to find me and my main IG is @sirslumfrom91

Andy Grammer

Baltimore Soundstage

Andy Grammer and his tour gang made an appearance at the Baltimore Sound Stage last Friday night and it was nothing short of spectacular. Up and coming singer-songwriter Josie Dunne opened up the night, filling the room with messages of empowerment and soulful sounds. She offers a unique experience with her bright energy and r&b style. The crowd couldn't get enough!

Following Josie was another up and coming soul-pop artist, John Spithoff, who matched the soulful theme of the lineup. His dynamic sound and charismatic presence engaged everyone in the room - his humor was definitely well received too. We'd say his first visit to Baltimore was a win.

And last but certainly not least, Andy Grammer and his crew took the stage by storm. His positive and upbeat vibes stole the night. Considering his message to pursue your dreams and be the best version of yourself, the feel-good mood continued to rise. His backup singers and instrumentalists appeared in complete sync with Grammer as they danced the night away on stage. Halfway through the performance, Grammer took a quick break from performing songs to share a new venture he's pursuing: poetry. The crowd took well to the change, as the plot of his poem took a turn, offering a heartfelt message to his fans.

All in all, the night was filled with lots of warmth and soul - great way to kick off the fall season!

DMV ACCESS Interviews Greg Holden

On September 18th, Greg Holden  is  coming  to the DMV where he will play at Baltimore Soundstage! We were very lucky to get an interview with him, I hope you all find this very interesting as much as we do!

Greg Holden

Q. How would you describe the style of your music and how it differentiates you from other artists?

A. Well, I would never claim out loud to be different from other artists because it would make me sound pretentious. But, if I had to come up with an obvious dissimilarity, it’s that I don’t tend to write typical songs about love. For better or for worse I focus more on the more difficult subject matters, such as refugees, homelessness, homophobia, and politics. Essentially, I’m a huge bummer.

Q. Who are your musical influences?

A. Old: Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen, The Kinks. New: The 1975, David Bazan, The Killers, and a lot of hardcore and metal, believe it or not.

Q. What do you want your listeners to take away from your music?

A. That my music is more than just a catchy melody in their head.

Q. What projects are you currently working on?

A. Staying sane, optimistic and inspired in an incredibly worrying time on planet earth. I also have a new single coming out in October, and I’m hoping to release a full-length record before the end of the year.

Q. What is a piece of advice you’d tell your younger self?

A. Take up the guitar 10 years earlier.

Q. How do you feel about the internet and digital media and their role in the music business today?

A. It has never been easier to record, release and promote music, and make your own money from it if you put real effort in. I think that’s an incredible thing. There is of course now a lot more shit you have to fight through to be heard, but that’s equally inspiring if you don’t let it intimidate you, which I of course absolutely do.

Q. Are there any new artists you’ve been listening to recently?

A. Not that they’re a “new” artist, but I’ve been enjoying Flor’s music lately.

Q. What advice would you give to younger musicians getting their start in the industry?

A. Keep your publishing. It’s the only thing potentially still worth something.

The Offspring’s and 311 with special guest Gym Class Heroes came to Bristow, Virginia August 26th on the last leg of their Never-Ending Summer Tour. Fans of all ages came from far and wide to jam out to some of rocks most classic songs.

While The Offspring haven’t released an album since 2012 (Days Go By). They still put on one hell of a show with a catalog of songs that really got the crowed hyped. Some notable songs on the set list were “Self-Esteem,” “Pretty Fly,” and “Come Out and Play.”

The Offspring weren’t the only ones who hyped up the crowed, 311 came out and really rocked the house with their over the top energy which the crowed fed off of. Their set list was pure gold and featured popular songs such as “Come Original,” “Amber,” and “Down.”

Check out the photo Galleries Below!

As Noodles, head guitarist for The Offspring, said during a break between songs “This is the largest crowed of the whole tour so far, so lets make this a truly never-ending summer.”

DMV Access Interviews Night Riots and Silent Revival

DMV Access Interviews Night Riots and Silent Revival

This Sunday night we had Night Riots & Silent Rival come to the DMV where they played at our DC venue U Street Music Hall. We were lucky to get an interview with both of them.

Night Riots Interview

What is something you’d tell your younger self

Probably to relax more and trust yourself.

Who’s been such a big influence to your music?

There’s not so much a person or artist but more so the drive to continually improve and expand musically.

How do you feel about the internet in the music business?

There’s good and bad too it.  It’s so much easier for artists to produce quality art but at the same time there is so much noise and opinion out there that things can get washed out.  Overall all it’s a cool time we live in for music.

What new music do you like?

The new J. Cole album is rad.  The band Vacationer is always a favorite.

Who would you be nervous to meet?

I don’t really get nervous or starstruck by people.  I like to stick by the old advice of ‘Don’t meet your heroes.” Everything is better in your head.

What is the funniest thing that has happened to you recently?

I spilled about a gallon of salsa down my pants recently and all over our photographers bag.  That was pretty fun.

How do you handle mistakes during a Performance

You just gotta roll with it.  Honestly, some of the most raw or real moments are mistakes and I’ve had fans say those were their favorite parts in a set.  We’re all human.

What advice would you give to beginners who are nervous?

Be true to yourself and do what you believe in.  Take criticism with a grain of salt and be relentless.

Silent Rival

1) At first, when we were throwing around band names, we liked Silent Rival because it sounded cool. But over time, it has taken on different meanings - one of them being that your worst enemy is yourself. It makes me think of the man in the mirror and that when you want to see a change in the world, first you have to change yourself.

Who’s been such a big influence to your music?

2) Joz and I were in a band before Silent Rival. Yutaka and Joz were in a band before that band. I was always a fan of theirs, and a year ago we all got together.

3) It's dancy, singable, upbeat alternative rock. It's hard to answer what makes us different, because I try to see all artists as individuals. Lumping artists together in categories is more of a job for the suits.

4) We have a really wide range of influences, and some influences that differ from each other's. We overlap in the genre of classic rock with bravado. Artists that still influence us today are different for each of us. Joz is still influenced by T. Rex, the Beatles, and Jimi Hendrix, and I am still influenced by the Beatles, Gladys Night, and Steven Tyler.

5) We are currently a handful of songs through our new album, and we're going to hopefully release it in the fall and continue touring for the next year.

6) Whatever they see fit. We get asked this question a lot, and I almost never know what to say because we get so much more out of it than anyone else. I wouldn't want to make any demands on top of what an audience gives me that they should take away.

Flagship

Baltimore Soundstage

A great way to start off the new week was heading down to Baltimore soundstage and watching the amazing band Flagship opening up for Blue October.

On Sunday May 20th,  DMV Access had the great honored to head down to Baltimore soundstage, and take some pictures of the band . They put on an amazing show, they was a lot head nodding with excitement and enjoyment  from the audience, one could feel nothing but good vibes only surrounding and the whole stage. They did some covers of their songs that are already out, and if you didn't know the words to the songs you couldn't stop your head from nodding to the music. If your into Indie music or  rock and roll your going to love them.

Make sure you check out more of their songs they have some really great songs, and down below are some picture we shot of him.

2nd pic.jpg

BJ THE CHICAGO KID

  1. What is something you’d tell your younger self?

Take your time and stay focused.

  1. Who’s been such a big influence to your music?

Right now, I would have to say Prince at this moment.  I’ve been listening to a lot of prince lately.

  1. How do you feel about the internet in the music business?

Honestly I think it’s really amazing.  It’s an evolution of life.  It’s something to adapt to.  It’s something to want to adapt to.  It provides so many cool opportunities for you to have better access to be a better business owner.  It provides so many ways to get information as well.  I love it.  I think it’s really cool.  I think it will get better in terms of streaming and sales.  I’m excited to see what will come next.  I’m sure it’s going to be a dope opportunity for us artists to connect with our fans even more.

  1. What new music do you like?

I’m a big Blac Youngster fan believe it or not.  I still love old soul music.  I listen to a lot of older music than newer music.  Of course I still love the Ty Dolla $igns but my musical playlist is everywhere.  Old, young, it’s all over the place.

  1. Who would you be nervous to meet?

I think Beyonce.  I’m a big vocal guy.  I think she’s a vocal beast.  When you think about everything she has accomplished it feels completely right to have a few butterflies if you’re going to meet the queen.

  1. What is the funniest thing that has happened to you recently?

Funny things happen everyday.  One of the funniest things that happened was when Anderson .Paak called me to the studio one day.  And this was a couple months ago, so I told him I had a friend with me just to let him know someone was with me.  It’s a code just to let them know so your company and just come and kick it.  Anderson said that was cool.

So we get to the studio and we open the door and it’s like 20 people in the studio!  I’m here thinking it’s going to be this small intimate session we are going to do this song and we get there and Dr. Dre is there and 20 other people.  The atmosphere was just so crazy we ended up making some dope music that night and we had amazing conversations but everyone in that room, I met them at different parts in my life.  So for Dr. Dre to have all of these people it was almost like I was walking into an old photo album of my life.  So yeah it was pretty funny when we all talked about it.

  1. How do you handle mistakes during a Performance?

There are no mistakes during a performance.  Everything is a learning experience.   Honestly it’s all a learning experience. The only way you learn not to do this is by doing it.  That’s why everything on stage is a learning experience.

  1. What advice would you give to beginners who are nervous?

Understanding what you’re here for.  You only get five seconds to be nervous not five minutes.  You gotta go to the bathroom and wash your face.  You gotta play the part and live up to it.  Live in the moment and stay in the moment.  You gotta understand that you pretty much studied and have all the experience that it takes to handle the situation.  So being nervous is only human that’s why you can wipe that emotion away and go in there and actually kickass.

Looking for the next big thing; for that group you could say you “knew about before they were big”?

Look no further than Lydia.

Lydia is an indie rock group based out of Gilbert, Arizona. Formed in 2003, the band is no stranger to the music industry. With five full-length albums and three EPs to date, they have perfected the craft of musicianship. The only thing that seems to have been holding them back was the rest of the world: the industry was simply not ready for their dark brand of pop music.

The mid 2010’s have been a turning point, however. Current trends in music have seen an embrace of dark, ambient, anthemic pop -- something Lydia has perfected. Their latest single, Goodside, is reminiscent of world-renowned acts like Imagine Dragons and PVRIS, as well as up-and-coming acts of similar styles, such as Billie Eilish and LANY. Having signed to Weekday Records, a subsidiary of Sony Music in 2017, Lydia now has the backing of industry greats and a perfect musical climate to break out into the mainstream.

In seeing them live, their impending success became even less of a question of “if” and more of “when.” Playing at the 9:30 club in Washington, DC, Lydia commanded the stage, their anthemic music and gloomy lighting put the entire crowd into a trance. Vocalist Leighton Antelman gave an energetic performance, bouncing along to the music, all whilst hitting every note. His energy was nicely complimented by the rhythmic movements of the other members, whose stage presences seemed to pay homage to the style of the xx; another band whose music has undoubtedly made an influential mark on Lydia’s sound.

I expect that not too long from now, Lydia will be headlining their own shows at the 9:30 club, and later, venues with much greater capacities. 2018 is shaping up to be a huge year for Lydia, who have finally been dealt a good hand -- and, if they play their cards right, current fans will very soon be able to say that they “knew them when.”

Keep an eye out for their new album, Liquor, out on July 13, 2018, and make sure to catch them on tour.

The Walk off the Earth concert this pass Sunday at the Fillmore in Silver Spring Maryland, felt literally like a Walk off the Earth experience. It was a sold out show the lines where very long.  It was definitely a show not to miss. They were filled with so much energy from the moment they stepped on stage, to the moment they stepped out of the stage. There was not a single dull moment throughout this concert. Their performance was phenomenal. The creativity in which this band has is just pure genius. It was most definitely a show for everyone even the little kids at the concert where having a blast. One guitar with five people  playing it is always an interesting thing to watch. The end of the show was just out of this world. They had confetti blowing throughout the show. They had smoke in side of their drums which had a cool effect when they hit on the drums. They had huge colorful balloons up in the ceiling which fell down toward the end of the show with confetti blowing.

New Politics

Fillmore Silver Spring

This week, we ended up having our lovely band New Politics  visit the Filmore with they’re amazing stunts man. David Boyd! They’re guitar player Soren, and last but not least our drummer Louie.

New Politics had  brought some unbelievable   openers which were,  Dreamers with they had played they’re new Cover of Zombie by the Cranberries. And the Wrecks with they’re hit Favorite Liar. Which got the crowd going. If you have never heard of the wrecks I’d recommend

on seeing them. Now you all know New Politics never disappoints a crowd with favorites like Harlem and Tonight You’re Perfect! Of course they played everyone’s new favorite the Color Green from they’re new album Lost In Translation. From my understanding I heard there’s five more shows on they’re tour. So don’t miss out on Lost In Translation Tour.

Monday March the 5th was a night to remember, an amazing show was put on by those amazing artist LP, Noah Kahan, Kat Cunning. The showed started off with Kat Cunning. If you had come in for one of the other artists mention and did not know who Kat Cunning was there was no way in which you were living the show without YouTubeing her name. Her stage presence was everything it was filled with so much energy and when she sang, it was as if you were the only one in the room and she was singing  directly for and to you only. Her voice Could Break Your Heart and mended at the same time. Whenever you looked up the stage you just saw a very confident woman very comfortable in her skin and someone who is loving what they're doing. It was a show not to be missed.  One of the best ways to starting off the weekend right is getting some amazing  Friday night concert tickets. ZZ Ward The Storm Tour was one of the great picks of concert you could have started off your week off with.

ZZ Ward, Black Pistol Fire, Billy Raffoul talk about a great recipe for amazing start of the weekend. There's no way you could have gone wrong if you were lucky enough to have picked out some tickets to this sold-out show. The show was held down in the 9:30 Club down in Washington D.C. It was a full house with a lot of excited fans. The fans were in for an amazing treat of phenomenal performers by those amazing artist.

Billy Raffoul open up the show. The 22-year-old singer, songwriter, and musician came with some very high performance energy and stole the hearts of many fans, and gained some new fans. Couldn't have imagined a better person to start off the night than Billy Raffoul. The 22 year old signature sound which has been described as “a rough-hewn, low-timbered rock and roll that nods to the likes of Jeff Buckley, Neil Young, and Joe Cockerand” when he sings one can not only hear the words he sang but you could feel it through his voice. He ended his part by playing an acoustic version of one of his now very famous song You Be Loved. With all the lights down low Billy and just his guitar you could see the audience closely listening and feeling all the world's to the  lyrics of the song which he was singing.

Black pistol fire what's up next and boy did he bring up the energy higher with his amazing guitar skill playing. The night was just filled with so much high energy everyone's feeling music singing along rocking  their heads and some people where  trying to air guitar along to him playing. Just when you thought things couldn't get any better they got better and boy did Black pistol fire bring on and put on an amazing show. Any way they could find to engage the audience with them they did. Walking up and down the stage to even  going off stage and walking among the fans playing his guitar. He even got up to a little platform to be able to be high enough so he could be closer to his fans we were upstairs. They just kept continuing with some amazing music and man did they know how to make the crowd go wild.

And the lady of the hour ZZ Ward. After some very much  anticipation from her fans cheering and waiting for her to get on stage. And just when you thought the night couldn't get any better boy oh boy were you wrong. Ladies and gentlemen you were in for a phenomenal show. The night just got better and better throughout the day, throughout the show. ZZ Ward knows how to put on a show and man did she. If you were  an old school ZZ fan or new ZZ fan there was a song for you. As she did some new songs of her new albums and she also put in some of her all times famous songs like “put the gun down”,  “Last Love Song” and she did  a song she did for the Disney pixels Cars 3 which came out last summer. Not only did she put on an amazing show with her singing or guitar playing skills but she put in some good old harmonica into it all.  One could feel the soul of her music. It was a show to not miss and every second was worth while.
